Product guide for young menstruators

Pads, period pants, tampons, cups and discs — what to try, when, and why.

This is general information for parents and carers, not medical advice. If you're worried about symptoms, contact your GP or NHS 111.

Start with pads and period pants

For most first-time menstruators, pads are the easiest entry point — external, no learning curve, no worry about leaving something in too long. Period pants are the second layer: brilliant overnight and for early cycles when timing is unpredictable.

Tampons, cups and discs are internal products. There is no rush and no age they "should" be used by. Wait until she asks.

How to choose absorbency

Absorbency is usually labelled as regular, super, or super-plus (with pictograms of droplets). Start with regular for daytime and night pads for sleeping. If she's soaking through a super pad in under 2 hours, that's a heavy-bleeding signal — read the red-flag article.

Sensitive skin, sport, and school

For sensitive skin: fragrance-free, cotton-topsheet pads. Skip anything scented.

For sport: period pants under kit, or a regular pad plus spare in her PE bag. Swimming is where tampons or period-swimwear come in — but only when she's ready.

For a school day: two pads plus a spare pair of underwear covers almost everything. Set a phone reminder to change every 3–4 hours until it becomes automatic.

Age & comfort matrix — what to try when

Ages here are typical, not rules. Follow her lead — pushing an internal product before she's ready backfires.
