Cycle syncing 101 — work with your body, not against it

Your hormones run on a roughly monthly rhythm. Here is how to plan work, training, food, and rest around it without becoming a slave to your phase.

Most productivity advice is built for a 24-hour hormonal cycle. That works fine for men. It does not work for you.

Women run on two clocks: the daily circadian rhythm, and a roughly monthly hormonal rhythm with four distinct phases. Cycle syncing is the practice of noticing where you are in the second clock and adjusting what you ask of yourself accordingly.

It is not magic, it is not mandatory, and it does not require a perfect 28-day cycle. It works for irregular cycles, PMOS (formerly PCOS), perimenopause, and women on hormonal contraception (with adjustments). It does not work for menopause where the rhythm has gone, in which case cycle syncing becomes circadian syncing.

The four phases

  1. Menstrual (days 1 to 5, give or take). Hormones at their lowest. Energy down, intuition up. Good for: reflection, planning the month, journaling, finishing things rather than starting them. Bad for: big launches, high-stakes presentations, anything that demands sustained social energy.

  2. Follicular (days 6 to 13). Oestrogen rising. Energy climbing, brain sharp, mood lifting. Good for: starting projects, learning, brainstorming, networking, high-intensity training. This is when you feel most like the version of you the world rewards.

  3. Ovulatory (days 14 to 16). Oestrogen and testosterone peak. You are at your most communicative, magnetic, and persuasive. Good for: presentations, sales calls, hard conversations, interviews, asking for the raise. Use this window deliberately.

  4. Luteal (days 17 to 28). Progesterone rises then drops. First half: focused, detail-oriented, good for editing and finishing. Second half: PMS arrives, sensitivity rises, tolerance drops. Good for: deep work, batch admin, slowing the calendar. Bad for: new commitments, conflict, anything that needs you to be patient with idiots.

How to start in one week

  • Today: open your tracker, mark day one of your last period.
  • This week: at the end of each day write one word for your energy (low/medium/high) and one for your mood.
  • Day seven: look at the pattern next to your cycle. You will already start to see it.
  • Week two: move one meeting. A pitch into your ovulatory window. A planning session into late luteal. Notice the difference.

What cycle syncing is not

  • Not an excuse to cancel things in your luteal phase forever.
  • Not a reason to deny yourself ambition during your period.
  • Not a replacement for medical care if your cycle is causing you to suffer.

It is a data set. Your body has been giving it to you for years. Nobody taught you how to read it.
